10 Tips for Maintaining a Healthy Heart
Want to prevent heart disease? Although there are some unchangeable risk factors, such as age and family history, there are several simple steps you can take in your daily life to maintain a healthy heart and prevent heart disease. Here are 10 tips for maintaining a healthy heart that you can start implementing today:
1. Quit smoking
One of the most important things you can do to maintain a healthy heart is to stop smoking. Smokers are two times more likely to get a heart attack than non-smokers. The chemicals in tobacco cause damage to your heart and blood vessels and cause the arteries to narrow. Smoking also increases your blood pressure. Fortunately, you can dramatically reduce your risk of heart disease within one year by quitting smoking.
2. Exercise regularly
Exercising on a regular basis will dramatically reduce your risk of heart disease. Aim to get at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise five days a week, or 20 minutes of vigorous activity three days a week. Your heart is a muscle, so it requires exercise in order to continue pumping blood efficiently.
3. Deal with stress in healthier ways
Negative emotions can cause the release of hormones that put you at risk of heart problems. Control stress and the negative emotions associated with it by practicing yoga, tai chi, breathing techniques, or meditation.
4. Have a balanced diet
A healthy diet will not only help you maintain a healthy heart, it’ll also increase your chance of survival after a heart attack. Your diet should contain plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
5. Monitor alcohol intake
One drink a day for women and one or two drinks a day for men can help to reduce inflammation and blood clots while raising good cholesterol. However, drinking too much can damage your heart, increase your blood pressure, and cause you to gain weight, so limit your alcohol intake to one to two drinks per day.
6. Lose weight
Excess weight can increase your risk of heart disease. For a healthy heart, make changes to your diet and lifestyle in order to slowly drop those excess pounds.
7. Get rid of your gut
Even if you’re not terribly overweight, having a big gut is bad because it raises your blood pressure, causes insulin resistance, and produces substances that cause inflammation of the arteries. Men who have a waist measurement of over 40 inches and women who have a waist measurement of over 35 inches, regardless of their height, need to get rid of their gut. The only way to get rid your gut is through overall weight loss through exercise and dietary changes.
8. Cut back on salt
If you have high blood pressure, cutting back on salt can reduce the risk of heart attack by 25 percent or more. You should consume no more than about a teaspoon of salt per day to maintain a healthy heart.
9. Undergo regular health screenings
You probably won’t realize that you have high blood pressure or high cholesterol unless you get tested for it. It’s a good idea to undergo regular health screenings so you can spot problems before it’s too late.
10. Recognize the early signs of heart disease
Early signs of coronary heart disease include tightness or discomfort in the stomach, neck, chest, or arm during physical exertion. If you notice these symptoms, see your doctor for treatment to prevent the risk of heart attack.
